Blog: Hair Removal Alternatives: Waxing vs Laser

We have been offering Waxing and Laser treatments for many years. We understand how each can be a daunting procedure if you have never experienced them before. With winter soon on its way out,  we will all be wearing less and wishing to be hair-less! Read on to find out whether Waxing or Laser Hair Removal could be a great alternative to daily shaving.

How Waxing works

Waxing is a well known method of hair removal. It works by applying warm wax onto the skin with hair, and a wax strip is applied on top of the wax. When you pull the strip away, the wax pulls the hair off cleanly from its root.

How often do you need to wax?

Waxing tends to last between 3-6 weeks, so it is a better alternative to shaving. However, waxing is semi-permanent and does not stop the production of hair over time, you will need to continue to have it done every few weeks.

Waxing suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, waxing is completely fine for sensitive skin, you may experience redness and inflammation but this should only be a short-term side effect.

How painful is Waxing?

Waxing is undoubtedly painful, but everyone has a varying pain tolerance. As a large area of hair is being pulled from the skin at one time it is going to be more uncomfortable on the sensitive areas,  however like with anything the more you do something, you more you get used to it as it’s less of a shock.

Waxing suitable for all hair types?

Waxing works well on all hair types, and if you wax regularly the hair actually grows back softer and finer.

How long is a waxing appointment?

Varies from 15 minutes up to 1 hour 15 minutes depending on the areas being waxed.

Any prep or maintenance with waxing?

The most important thing when it comes to prepping for your appointment is that the hair is long enough for the wax to grip the hairs to remove them. A quarter of an inch is an ideal length for leg, underarm or bikini hair, but we know how hard it can be to refrain from shaving during that time!

It’s wise to exfoliate and moisturise to help prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid fake tan, extreme heat treatments or UV exposure for up to 48 hours. Our beauty therapists will advise on waxing aftercare.

Waxing Cost

Waxing is reasonable in terms of cost. For an average hair growth cycle, you should book a wax every 3-6 weeks, and depending on how many areas you do will affect maintenance costs. Find our more about our prices here.

How Laser Hair Removal works

Laser treatment is an effective way of removing hair as it encourages a long term reduction of hair growth. It works by using a laser which targets the melanin in the hair follicle. The melanin absorbs the light, heats up and damages the hair follicle, the hair follicle is therefore no longer able to produce hair.

How painful is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a tolerable procedure. It is often described as a pinging of an elastic band against the skin, so not exactly painful but an uncomfortable sensation. We can always provide a local anaesthetic cream if necessary.

suitable for seNsitive Skin?

All skin types can be treated including sensitive skin.

How often do you need a laser treatment?

Temporary hair removal is achieved in a single treatment. Long-term hair reduction varies between clients - depending on the strength of hair and growth cycle. Typically 6-8 treatments are required to achieve lasting hair reduction. Darker skins will need more treatments - partly due to the strength of the hair.

Clients with black, brown and dark blonde hair will benefit most from laser hair removal, with long lasting results.

Clients with light blonde or white can experience a temporary loss of hair for three months.
